New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his victory in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
But his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a well-known family.
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
