Venus Williams, 45, Receives Wild Card for Her Initial Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.
Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
Venus had earlier stated in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.
Setting a Fresh Benchmark
The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
