So, how was the past year in your family? Could it be described as truly wonderful as you pretended on social media? Overflowing with top marks for your offspring and riotous costume celebrations for the grownups? Or was it a swamp of letdowns with only sporadic fun flotsam? And was any of it genuine, or are we all digitally altered synthetic personas with perfect teeth?
I've assembled my thoughts for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the crucial thing in any given year: what titles we played the most. Without further ado:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"It’s not my games column."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "trying to find adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. I respect that.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into acting, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to prepare him so he can grow up and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the start. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the wee small hours after family time.
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was 2024’s sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is incredible. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play constantly. Add in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an definite pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I received a bit of backlash when I mentioned how a specific bug in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I present that verbatim, because I respect the passion, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I get that it has great art and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when all games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Close call between questionable alliances that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it is sore like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
