The sentencing of political dissident Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Rights groups and multiple governments have labeled the national security convictions politically motivated.
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper remarked that the 20-year term constitutes a de facto life term for the elderly man. She characterized the trial as being driven by political motives via a statute designed to silence critics of China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.
“This outcome illustrates how the imprecise and extensive clauses of Hong Kong’s national security legislation may be enforced in violation of global human rights commitments,” stated the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deeply regrets” the result of the lengthy trial and called for his prompt and absolute freedom.
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the introduction of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was passed by China's government following widespread unrest backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was sentenced on charges including colluding to publish subversive content and colluding with overseas entities. The second set of accusations were based on the disputed legislation.
Lai’s son, Sebastien, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation apart from his relatives. The legal team has called him the “globally most notable political prisoner” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the sentence was expected, its announcement felt worse than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
The sentencing has influenced UK-China relations. British leader Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Yet, the extent of progress on obtaining his liberty remains unclear.
Sebastien Lai asked the upside to a visa-free travel agreement announced recently, remarking it felt “somewhat insensitive.”
Conversely, the officials from China applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee claimed the sentence manifested that “law and order is maintained.”
The mouthpiece of China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “primary instigator” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and stated the prosecution was “legitimate and lawful.” He urged other nations not to interfere in what he termed China's internal issues.
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders labeled Lai as a symbol of diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Their director general remarked it was a “dark day for those who care about a liberty of the press.”
With a near 100% conviction rate for security-related crimes, Lai’s harsh punishment is viewed as the strictest yet imposed under the security statute.
