The Reze Arc Movie Dominates the U.S. Box Office in Debut Weekend

Has Sony done it again? In the wake of the success of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the hundred-million-dollar threshold globally, hitting a international earnings of $108 million during its debut. This movie beat out the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Notable American and International Performance

Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It earned $18.2M domestically after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday earnings and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday. Globally, the MAPPA-produced feature added $14.7M across 46 global regions, pushing its worldwide total to over $60 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M overseas, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.

Comparisons to Other Anime Hits

Specialist agency a leading anime marketing group noted in prior discussions, comparing the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in the year 2022 and started with a nearly identical $18 million domestically. The new film's first weekend is in line with that benchmark, while its $108 million global gross currently tracks a bit short of Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will match the numbers of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the distributor.

Marketing Campaigns Drive Performance

Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized community involvement to drive their leadership at the cinema for anime films. The Reze Arc advertising push kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a notable appearance at the New York Comic Con featuring never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and popular figures too after the last day of the gathering.

Looking Ahead

2025 is a major time for anime, and for the company, which has an additional feature-length anime premiering in 2025 in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in the month of November.
