The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
