The English Team to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at City’s Home Ground

The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship journey at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they attain the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s match since eight years ago, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to stage the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.

The English side are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Kickoff and Rally

The championship was launched at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the venue by about 50 protesters, who called for Israel’s national side to be kicked out from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.

Signs were displayed with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will include the Dragons if they qualify.

The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.

It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for European club finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help engage a broader range of viewers.

Host Nations

The Irish team are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

All four host countries’ teams will enter the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through the qualification path.

Venues and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground round out the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches held at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.

Official Statement

“It will be a competition for the followers and a celebration of everything we cherish about the football – its emotion and capacity to foster unity.”

More than three million tickets, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are expected to be offered to fans.
