The royal is surrendering his honors, among them the Duke of York, he has announced in a own words.
He has been under mounting attention over his connections with convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein, with requests for the Palace to take measures against him.
That now seems to have caused the prince deciding to of his own accord give up his honors and to give up involvement of the Garter Order.
In his announcement he said he continued to "firmly refute the accusations against me".
"In consultation with the sovereign, and my immediate and wider family, we have agreed the persistent claims about me take away from the work of the King and the royal household," said a statement from the royal.
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my relatives and land first.
"I uphold my decision five years ago to step back from official duties.
"With the monarch's consent, we believe I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer employ my honor or the honours which have been bestowed on me. As I have said previously, I firmly deny the allegations against me."
The royal has encountered a range of controversies, including a lawsuit he settled with the plaintiff, doubts about his money matters and his association with an accused Chinese spy.
He will remain a prince - but will cease to be the the Duke, a title granted from his the late Queen, the late Queen Elizabeth.
Andrew had already ended to be a "working royal" and had given up the use of his royal style and no longer was seen at state occasions. His position now will be even more diminished.
His previous partner will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer York's Duchess, but their children will continue to have the designation of princesses.
The royal has encountered strong examination over his connections with disgraced financier Epstein, more in recent times involving doubts about when he had really severed communication.
In his television appearance, the royal had said that he had cut off all links with Epstein after they had been photographed together in the city in late 2010.
But correspondence sent in early 2011 later came to light suggesting that the prince had confidentially continued in contact with the financier, for example exchanging a note: "Keep in close touch and we'll play some more soon!"
There had been growing annoyance in the royal household at the scandals that continued to plague the prince.
Next week a book released after death by Virginia Giuffre will be released which is expected to bring further scrutiny on his association with the plaintiff and Epstein.
