Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle amid the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.
The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement concluded.
