The direst projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by experts, encompassing a blistering 4C increase in temperatures to a two-metre surge in sea levels. An alternative projection envisions a drop of 6C in temperatures following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact agriculture and energy demand.

Credible Events, Not Guarantees

These impacts, some of which are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are considered as improbable but plausible. The scientists stated that these projections filled a gap in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.

"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," commented the professor who led the study. "Britain has been planning lacking the tools to assess extreme possibilities. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to prepare for future conditions they hope never happen, but canโ€™t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Scenarios

Another collection of severe models sets out the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the end of the century. These show that temperatures could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be three times standard measurements.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events occurring remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what measures will be enacted to address climate change and how the planet's climate will react. This analysis was compared to defence planning or scenario planning for the banking sector.

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures rising well above 4C by 2100 could transpire if climate action fails or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon rainforest dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the AMOC, is slowing down and becoming unstable due to climate change. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Farming would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," noted the professor.
  • Sudden Ocean Inundation: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if glaciers in the polar regions collapse rapidly, inundating low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already recognized by infrastructure experts.
  • Clean Air Warming: Temperatures could also be increased by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity scatter solar radiation from reaching the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Worst

The research developed the severe projections using a combination of past data and records, digital projections and climate physics. These outcomes omit international cascading effects like the devastation of food supplies and increased conflict.

The project was initiated as part of a official climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have warned that not enough attention was being given to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

Official experts has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and assess the threats for four degrees. Past policy documents have been labeled being "very weak" by some observers.

A national response commented: "Climate change is at the center of the country's focus, both adapting for the future and establishing itself as a low-carbon economy. It is essential that the UK is prepared for the consequences."
