A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose of the attack is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.
Police revealed that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a building near the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the property managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, as per local media.
"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement confirmed.
Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and clad in what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.
Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the incident.
Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the location.
Police have appealed members of the public who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been following their trail to establish their location," added an official.
His sister, a close relative, stated the loved ones are reeling to understand the tragedy.
"I am devastated. I am shattered," were her words.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were prepared to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She requested the citizens to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the incident, saying this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's young family.
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that premiered on a popular local TV network.
In addition to his work in broadcasting, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including private security, providing high-level security services and securing high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in property management and participated in tenant removals.
His death has caused national trauma and triggered an flood of condolences from his followers, the government and political parties.
A cabinet official commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.
"He spoke his truth boldly and honestly. He even spoke up against me and my actions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we should be," he stated.
A public representative stated the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".
A industry leader said that "Stock was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a true devotee of sound and a kind-hearted individual who brought happiness and vitality to every performance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a release, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his legacy "will live on".
