Qatar Sprint Race and Main Event Qualifying: Real-Time Coverage

Opening Notes

The author will be here shortly to cover this day's sprint race (14:00 GMT) and qualifying (6pm).

Real-Time Updates

Starting Lap Period

The warm-up lap has started.

Circuit Details

We have nineteen laps of the longest circuit in Formula 1, David Croft informs us.

Final Moments

The countdown is underway.

Racer Positions

An advantage in Verstappen's favour: his fellow driver Tsunoda is ahead of him by one place. He is unlikely to mess with the team's lead driver.

Media Conversations

Sky interviewing Sky now: the analyst is with Mercedes.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to the 2026 season, speaking with the engineer about his stepping up to the team lead role.

Starting Positions

There are only 16 cars on the grid. This followed another bad qualifying for the driver: after coming twentieth and final in the previous race, resulting in an eighth position in the main race, he failed to advance of the first qualifying segment again on the previous day. The team have consequently made changes to his car configuration and so he will start from the pit lane.

Aston Martin's Stroll and the Alpine pair of Pierre Gasly and Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Racer Statements

"We'll use the experience for tomorrow," states Isack Hadjar, 11th on the grid. Expect plenty of learning.

Constructors' Championship

The focus isn't solely on the drivers' title: McLaren have run away with the constructors' gong but the team, with a forty-point advantage over their rivals, are aiming to secure the runner-up position during this event. George Russell can help them achieve that from the front row, and Antonelli will start just behind the leader.

Previous Results

Piastri won that day – as he did the previous season, as well. The driver from McLaren is attempting a hat-trick.

Short Race Importance

Alright, just over twenty minutes to go until the short race gets under way. Unless something goes wrong, its main importance is as an indication of future events, instead of significant in its itself, with only eight points awarded to the victor. However, second place in this race was sufficient for the driver to become champion in a prior season.

The driver claimed the championship following Pérez crashes out of the short race.
