McLaren Attributes Crash to Competitors for Norris-Piastri Incident

Tire detaches from racing car after collision between Norris and Piastri

A racing wheel flies off the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix short race.

McLaren F1 team leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to rival drivers for the collision between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

The Australian driver, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, bounced into his team-mate after hitting the Hulkenberg.

The incident forced out both McLaren drivers out of the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.

McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Incident

Brown, the team's chief executive officer, stated to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "amateur hour", stating: "Obviously Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

The team team principal Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we were denied the possibility to compete."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise fail to act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, make sure you avoid harming competitors and continue."

McLaren clarified that Stella was mentioning both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Incident

Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not shown enough understanding of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he chose to cut back to try to pass Norris.

Piastri had a stronger launch than the Briton and at first challenged on the outside on the ascending approach to the corner.

But he then cut back in an attempt to get a run on Norris on the exit, only to make contact with the Sauber driver.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what happened, I attempted to move inside on Norris and we were both very far from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."

His teammate commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us events unfolded and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some cars came very fast from the outside switching back and then I was there in the middle."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the strong performance from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Piastri turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Oscar steered inward and the contact was inevitable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

McLaren will review the crash with their drivers but not until the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on the weekend.

The team principal said: "In general disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a competitive place from our performance point of view so I hope we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."

"The points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was taken by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of the Briton.

Stella said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we missed out on eight championship points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two skilled drivers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was taking the championship race by race.
