The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
