A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they call entirely unreasonable cost hikes for lift tickets this winter season, cautioning that skiing could become a luxury reserved for affluent individuals.
From the majestic Alps and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern territories to the ski runs of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by up to 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to fresh research.
The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now set visitors back €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is projected to hit €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.
At the same time, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and dining expenses throughout mountain resorts.
Gabriele Melluso, heading the consumer protection group, emphasized that the price increases—which operators blame on increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and not acceptable.
"Both because inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," Melluso noted.
He added that prices have now reached levels where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, altogether.
He noted a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to rising costs.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for winter sports fans in the European region compared to nearby Swiss resorts, France, and Austrian locations.
The increasing worry over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the 2026 Winter Games between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, Antonio Tajani, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the international event.
"Through the Winter Games we must also send a message of peace and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Olympics," he declared.
