Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, responding to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton made remarks following Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The team finished 4-11 in his debut year before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
