A key creative force behind a legendary franchise is crafting a new venture with a fresh title. The upcoming game, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the inaugural effort of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it draws heavily from his previous work with a focus on reactive companion characters.
Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a character-puzzle-platformer. Players control a seasoned spellcaster, a protagonist who subverts traditional video game heroics. The core idea came from an interest in re-examining what it means to be a protagonist.
"What if you lacked combat prowess? What if you were physically limited? An aging witch, for instance?" mused the director. "This felt deeply interesting to think about the definition of a protagonist. Heroism involves overcoming problems, but it’s also about sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
Although this project looks different at first glance, its most significant advancement is a direct continuation the character dynamics seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception was inspired by one pivotal question: "Is it possible to design a companion character even more reactive and adaptive to the player?"
The mysterious beast in the game transcends typical AI behavior. Straley describes it as a curious child that reacts in three key stages. Initially, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in playful hijinks. Subsequently, it moves into a mimicry phase. Finally, it analyzes to understand to learn how things work.
Such advanced AI is designed to create a deeply personal experience. The creative lead highlights that the game functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a traditionally structured narrative.
"Whenever I attempted traditional three-act structure for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," the director noted. "The true vitality between these characters is that you as a player will inevitably create different sparks and narrative compared to my playthrough."
This commitment to player-defined experiences, the new title signifies simultaneously a refinement and a significant shift from the director’s legendary previous titles. The game remains targeting PC platforms.
