Far-Right Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.

Following a conclusive final ballot, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Built On Security and Immigration

Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily focused on promises to combat rising violence and drastically curb migration.

He consistently blamed migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an stern warning for them to leave before the inauguration or face expulsion.

His policy ideas featured controversial measures such as building camps, border walls, electric fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern border.

Amid a Continental Trend

Many observers view Kast's victory as aligning with a wider rightward wave in Latin America, following this year's electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts also frame it as a continuation of the predictable alternation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Ruling Without a Solid Majority

Despite his clear electoral triumph, Kast does not have an absolute majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are combined together.

This legislative situation might hinder his plans, including a promise to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not offered concrete steps.

"We have numerous things about what a Kast administration will look like that remain unclear because he has not explained how he will implement them," commented a political science expert.

The expert continued, "On the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However the area with much less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse during the campaign."
