Elena Rybakina Upsets Sabalenka to Secure Historic £4m Payout
Rybakina sealed her forty-fifth hard court triumph of the year
Elena Rybakina won the biggest prize in women's tennis history by beating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets at the tournament.
Rybakina produced a brilliant performance to overcome four-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka in two sets in the host country.
Because both players came through the tournament undefeated, the prize money on the table was a unprecedented £3.98m – the biggest prize offering in WTA history.
The reward tops the £3.74 million Sabalenka earned for claiming September's US Open, which was the most lucrative Grand Slam in 2025.
"It's been an incredible tournament," stated the Kazakh player.
"I honestly didn't expect any result so to win the title was just incredible."
"Let me offer praise to Aryna for holding the top spot for a second consecutive year in a row, it's an outstanding accomplishment."
Rybakina, who was the world number six, delivered sixteen winners during a commanding first-set performance.
The 2022 Wimbledon winner fended off two break points before winning all four points in the sixth game of the set to take the break and held her serve to secure the opening set.
As the second set progressed, Sabalenka saved another two break points at four-all to shift the balance in her favour.
However, after fighting back to disrupt Rybakina's rhythm, Sabalenka failed to capitalize by wasting two set points in the next game to tie the set at 5-5.
Her inability to force a decider affected her tiebreak performance, with the Kazakh taking all seven points to win the title.
This win, Rybakina's sixth over Sabalenka, means Rybakina will move up one place in the WTA rankings to number five in the world.
An emotional Sabalenka was seen crying as she met with her coaching team soon after the match.
"It was not the best performance from me in this match but Elena you were certainly the superior player," the Belarusian told the crowd.
"You literally smashed me on court. I'm pleased to see you play your best tennis. Celebrate this beautiful title."
