In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.
The agreement features a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17M for the following year.
Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite striking out often, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that scored teammates for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he blasted a game-tying homer in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 championship win.
The lefty slugger is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
