Both young individuals who died in the recent violent attack at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – amid a widespread hunt for their killer continued following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual questioned in the case.
The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also expressed words of sorrow on social media, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the renowned school, family members said.
Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a raid at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our city”.
The assailant discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the media outlet.
Officers that entered the hotel recovered two firearms and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.
Among those wounded, a single scholar was released from the hospital, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.
An educational institution, a private academy in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “Ella was known for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and fellow classmates,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his bright future.”
The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in the current year, according to records. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
