An esteemed Russian military figure has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to official statements.

The incident happened on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

The committee stated that one possible explanation involves the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Site of the Attack

Teams have been sent to the site, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.

Media coverage suggest the explosion took place in a car park close to a residential building.

Pattern of Incidents

Since the beginning of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.

This most recent event follows other serious incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The war has witnessed shadowy operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
