Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the deceased director Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the iconic rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home over the weekend.
“How we will long for this man…” the actress posted on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“I must hold onto hope that their tale doesn't conclude here, that awareness can be heightened from this,” Ryan added. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner through a message shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“No one matched his comic instinct, his dedication to rhythmic dialogue, or his elegant sharpening of drama,” the tribute noted. “He cherished performers and improved scribes. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
When Harry Met Sally was a critical and commercial success in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner during the production of When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.
Reiner’s extensive filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
